Quantum sector : USA vs Europe

The market around Quantum technology is growing. Hundreds of “Quantum” Startups are scattered around the world. Yet, the question remains, which country holds the lead.

For most people it’s obvious that the US is leading the sector (as it bears the biggest tech companies (google, IBM,..)).

And that is the case when looking at the revenue.(2025)

Revenue

Quantum Sector

The quantum sector in the US produced almost twice as much revenue as europe. And this while having 22% less quantum companies as europe.

Amount of quantum companies
USA110
Europe141
Global441

A reason for that might be the amount of governmental funding. Here it is visible, why many Founders choose Europe. As it “outfunds” the US by billions, even Germany alone almost matches the governmental investments of the US.

Funding

This creates a picture of Startups being funded more in Europe, yet this is not always the case.

Private / non governmental investments in the US are in average more than 3 times as high as in Europe.

private funding2012-20242024
USA$3,44 billion$1,75 billion
Europe$1,02 billion$0,53 billion

Outlook:

In my opinion: Europe is not that far behind, and in the future Europe could even be the leader in this sector. As most of European Startups are still young (which results in low revenue), but nonetheless they have valid and innovative science behind them. In 2024 8 of 19 new quantum Startups were founded in Europe, which emphasizes Europe’s attractiveness and sufficient Know-How. I believe that trend to continue in the near future.
